FAQ
Planting Information
The ideal season to plant?
WWW B Dahl is a warm-season bunch grass perennial.
Where does it come from?
It comes from the Old World Bluestem family, known for its abundant production in most soils. It fits in well with intense grazing systems and/or hay production. With only marginal amendments, it will exceed most forages in both quality as well as quantity.
What is the nominal seeding rate?
The nominal seeding rate is two pounds PLS (pure live seed) per acre. Those wishing for a mix are advised to establish B Dahl first, and all additional forages later.
How should it be planted?
When initiating B Dahl, competition needs to be at a minimum. Weeds must be sprayed to produce a successful stand. Many people spread the seed mixed with fertilizer, followed up by either a roller, light harrow or just using livestock as a means to get soil contact. A no-till drill is another option.
Where is it best to plant?
Locally, many people have their established meadows for haying but have found that B Dahl, with its deep roots, works well on hilly, shallow soils where other forages have failed. Also noted, when army worms invade, they do not pick on the B Dahl, and ticks avoid it as well.
What are its hay values?
As for hay, B Dahl produces pure leaves all summer long, only creating stems in late September in preparation for a seed head.
